Achilles Tendon Rupture by Dr. Amber Shane

This case comes from Dr. Amber Shane, DPM, of Orlando, Florida:

A 37 year-old male initially presents with a full-thickness Achilles Tendon rupture from a basketball jumping injury 3 days ago. The patient underwent end-to-end open primary repair.  Full healing of the surgical site occurred at two weeks with a normal postoperative course. Four weeks from the date of surgery the patient was using a knee scooter without his boot and fell from the scooter on the surgical limb subsequently ruptured the Achilles proximal to the repair. The patient then proceeded to the OR for repair. Greater than a 6 centimeter deficit was created from the rupture and disrupted previous repair. Therefore, a turn down technique was utilized from gastrocnemius aponeurosis to repair the deficit, an amnio membrane was placed over the repair to decrease adhesions and inflammation.  Images attached.
